Fr. Justin Ford - St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ascot Vale

Our parish was delighted to have Chorus Ecclesiae sing at Sunday Mass on two recent occasions.

The Church tells us, ‘The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value…to be preserved and fostered with great care…Gregorian chant [is] specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services. But other kinds of sacred music, especially polyphony, are by no means excluded…’ (Vatican II, Sacrosanctum Concilium 112, 114, 116)

Chorus Ecclesiae admirably fulfils these wishes of the Church, bringing the riches of Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony to parish worship, along with hymns and responses in which the people can join their voices, as the Church also desires.

The choir’s beautiful singing, as my parishioners and I joyfully experienced, ‘adds delight to prayer, fosters unity of minds’ and ‘confers greater solemnity upon the sacred rites’, thus fulfilling ‘the purpose of sacred music, which is the glory of God and the sanctification of the faithful’. (Sacrosanctum Concilium 112) I look forward to the future visits of Chorus Ecclesiae, and thoroughly recommend its services to any parish.
